This maintains the texture, and is meant for things like clothing, objects where the texture of the object is important. Color changer literally changes the color (hue + saturation) while leaving the lightness alone.
There is a reason they use the solid color selection and not the gradient selection on the materials palette. I didn't say the color changer doesn't work, but that it doesn't work with gradients because of its use case. Can you just tell me what your settings are?
